Many people taking Ozempic (semaglutide) or similar GLP-1 drugs say their alcohol cravings ease. Early clinical trials back this up in part: in small studies from 2025 and 2026, semaglutide reduced heavy drinking and some measures of craving. But no GLP-1 drug is FDA-approved to treat alcohol use disorder, and approved medications already exist.
Please don't start, stop, or change a medication on your own to change your drinking. Talk with your prescriber first. And if you drink heavily, don't quit suddenly without medical advice, because alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous.
Does Ozempic reduce alcohol cravings?
It may for some people, but the evidence is still early. Researchers began studying the question partly because people on semaglutide described a reduced desire to drink. Nature Communications: Semaglutide and alcohol use disorder
Small trials in people with alcohol use disorder have now tested it. Semaglutide lowered craving on some measures but not others. It cut how much people drank on the days they drank, but not every drinking measure changed. "It may help some people drink less" is a fair summary. "It ends alcohol cravings" is not.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a gut hormone that helps control blood sugar and appetite. Semaglutide is sold as Ozempic and Wegovy. Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound, acts on GLP-1 and a second hormone receptor.
What do clinical trials show about semaglutide and alcohol use disorder?
Three randomized, placebo-controlled trials of semaglutide in people with alcohol use disorder have been published. All were small phase 2 studies.
- 2025, JAMA Psychiatry (48 adults, 9 weeks). Low-dose weekly semaglutide injections reduced how much alcohol people drank in a lab drinking session. They also reduced drinks per drinking day and weekly craving. They did not change the number of drinking days or average drinks per day. Participants were not seeking treatment. JAMA Psychiatry: Once-weekly semaglutide in AUD
- 2026, American Journal of Psychiatry (50 adults, 8 weeks). In adults seeking treatment for moderate to severe alcohol use disorder, oral semaglutide reduced heavy drinking days, drinks per drinking day, day-to-day craving, and alcohol-related problems. It did not reduce craving measured in the lab or overall drinks per day. American Journal of Psychiatry: Oral semaglutide for AUD
- 2026, The Lancet (108 adults, 26 weeks). This trial enrolled treatment-seeking adults with alcohol use disorder and obesity. Everyone also received cognitive behavioral therapy. The share of heavy drinking days fell by about 41 percentage points with semaglutide and about 26 with placebo. Side effects were mostly mild to moderate stomach problems. The Lancet: Semaglutide in AUD with obesity
The placebo group in the Lancet trial improved too, since everyone got therapy. The gap between the two groups is what semaglutide added.
Trials of older GLP-1 drugs were mixed. A 2022 Danish trial of exenatide in 127 people did not reduce heavy drinking days overall, though an exploratory analysis suggested a benefit in people with obesity. JCI Insight: Exenatide for AUD In a smoking-cessation trial, people taking dulaglutide drank 29% less than people on placebo. That was a secondary analysis of 151 drinkers who were not selected for alcohol use disorder. JCI Insight: Dulaglutide and alcohol
What do large real-world studies show?
Large health-record studies link GLP-1 drugs to fewer alcohol problems, but they can't prove the drugs caused the difference.
- A 2024 US study of 83,825 people with obesity found that semaglutide, compared with other weight-loss medications, was linked to a 50% to 56% lower risk of a new or recurring alcohol use disorder diagnosis over 12 months. Results were similar in about 600,000 people with type 2 diabetes. Nature Communications: Semaglutide and alcohol use disorder
- A 2025 Swedish study followed 227,866 people with alcohol use disorder. Periods when people took semaglutide were linked to a 36% lower risk of being hospitalized for alcohol use disorder, compared with periods off GLP-1 drugs. JAMA Psychiatry: Semaglutide and liraglutide for AUD
- A 2026 US study of adults with type 2 diabetes found that people starting semaglutide or tirzepatide had lower rates of hospital or emergency visits for alcohol use disorder than people starting another diabetes drug. There was no difference between semaglutide and tirzepatide. Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism: Semaglutide, tirzepatide, and alcohol outcomes
People who get these prescriptions may differ from people who don't, in ways records can't capture. That is why trials matter. A 2025 meta-analysis found that observational studies showed fewer alcohol-related events, but the randomized trials published by then did not show statistically significant drops in drinking or craving. It called for larger trials. Addiction Science & Clinical Practice: GLP-1 drugs and alcohol outcomes
How might GLP-1 drugs affect drinking?
The leading idea is that they act on the brain's reward system, but this is still a hypothesis in people. A 2026 review says animal and early human data suggest that GLP-1 receptors in reward areas of the brain dampen dopamine-driven reward. The drugs' effects on fullness and appetite may also play a part. Addictive Behaviors: Semaglutide for AUD review
Brain scans in the exenatide trial showed smaller responses to alcohol cues in the ventral striatum, an area involved in reward and addiction. JCI Insight: Exenatide for AUD The same review notes that weight loss could confound some results, and that studies so far are small and short.
Is Ozempic FDA-approved for alcohol use disorder?
No. The FDA labels for Ozempic and Mounjaro cover type 2 diabetes and related heart and kidney risks. FDA label: Ozempic (semaglutide); FDA label: Mounjaro (tirzepatide) Wegovy and Zepbound are approved for weight management and a few other conditions. FDA label: Wegovy (semaglutide); FDA label: Zepbound (tirzepatide) None lists alcohol use disorder.
A 2026 review put it plainly: "No GLP-1 receptor agonist currently carries FDA approval for alcohol use disorder." Addictive Behaviors: Semaglutide for AUD review
Bigger studies are under way. The VA is recruiting 622 veterans for a phase 3 trial of semaglutide in alcohol use disorder. ClinicalTrials.gov: CRAVE trial A 2026 analysis counted 14 ongoing randomized trials of these drugs in alcohol use disorder. Journal of Psychiatric Research: Incretin trials in psychiatry
Using a GLP-1 drug for drinking would be off-label. That is a decision for a prescriber who knows your full health history.
Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking Ozempic or Mounjaro?
Ask your prescriber. The labels don't give alcohol-specific advice, but several known risks overlap with drinking.
- Stomach upset and dehydration. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation are among the most common side effects. FDA label: Wegovy (semaglutide) All four labels warn that fluid loss from these symptoms has led to kidney injury. Tell your prescriber if you can't keep fluids down.
- Pancreatitis. The labels warn that acute pancreatitis has occurred with these drugs. FDA label: Ozempic (semaglutide) Heavy alcohol use is also one of the most common causes of pancreatitis. Pain in the upper belly that spreads to the back needs prompt medical care. NIDDK: Pancreatitis
- Low blood sugar. Taking a GLP-1 drug with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines raises the risk of low blood sugar. FDA label: Ozempic (semaglutide) Alcohol makes it harder to keep blood sugar steady, especially if you haven't eaten, and can hide early warning signs. NIDDK: Low blood glucose
What about compounded or online semaglutide?
Use only FDA-approved products from a prescriber and a licensed pharmacy. The FDA says compounded drugs "are not FDA approved" and are not reviewed for safety, effectiveness, or quality. By May 31, 2026, it had received 990 adverse event reports tied to compounded semaglutide and more than 730 tied to compounded tirzepatide. Some of those reports, which may be tied to dosing errors, involved hospital care. The FDA also warns about counterfeits. FDA: Concerns with unapproved GLP-1 drugs
Buying a GLP-1 online to treat your own drinking adds these risks on top of an unproven use.
What medications are approved for alcohol use disorder?
Three medications are approved for alcohol use disorder in the United States. NIAAA: Treatment for alcohol problems
- Naltrexone, a pill or injection, "helps reduce the urge to drink."
- Acamprosate, a pill, eases the negative symptoms some people feel when they stop drinking.
- Disulfiram, a pill, causes unpleasant symptoms if you drink.
NIAAA says all three are nonaddictive and can be used alone or with counseling. SAMHSA notes they don't cure the disorder but work best for people in a treatment program. SAMHSA: Treatment options Counseling helps people identify and change the behaviors that lead to alcohol problems.
Our guides to MAT for alcohol use disorder and anti-craving medications explain these options in more detail.
Why shouldn't you stop heavy drinking suddenly?
Because withdrawal can be serious. NIAAA warns that when someone who has been drinking heavily for a long time suddenly stops, withdrawal can be "painful or even potentially life-threatening." NIAAA: Treatment for alcohol problems Symptoms often start within 8 hours of the last drink and peak in 24 to 72 hours. MedlinePlus: Alcohol withdrawal
Call 911 for seizures, fever, severe confusion, hallucinations, or an irregular heartbeat. MedlinePlus: Alcohol withdrawal If you drink heavily and your drinking drops sharply for any reason, including a new medication, tell your provider about shakiness, sweating, or anxiety. A doctor can plan a safer path, and medical detox is one option.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take Ozempic to stop drinking?
Not as an approved use. No GLP-1 drug is FDA-approved for alcohol use disorder. Talk with a doctor about approved medications and counseling, which have a longer track record.
Does Mounjaro or Zepbound reduce alcohol cravings?
Tirzepatide is being tested in alcohol use disorder trials, but results aren't published yet. A 2026 health-record study linked it to fewer alcohol-related hospital and emergency visits in people with diabetes.
Will cravings come back if I stop a GLP-1?
There isn't good evidence yet. The published semaglutide trials lasted 26 weeks or less, and reviewers point to short follow-up as a key gap.
Is it safe to drink on Ozempic?
The label doesn't address alcohol directly. Stomach side effects, pancreatitis, and low blood sugar are risks with both. Ask your prescriber what's safe for you.
Should I stop my GLP-1 if I drink?
Don't stop or change it on your own. Tell your prescriber how much you drink so they can weigh the risks with you.
