What is buprenorphine?

My son checked into treatment and the doctor there prescribed him subutex aka buprenorphine. What is this and is it dangerous?
Paul G Subutex is a drug designed to reduce cravings and help ease him through withdrawal symptoms. Most likely the staff as his treatment center has his prescription so he cannot take more than the recommended dose at a time. Technically, it is still an opioid, but the risks are much less than heroin or other opioids on the street.
Fran H My son tried the same treatment. It seemed to help with urges but ultimately he had to stop because he could have any substance in his system for his job. He stopped and have been attending meetings. I think that did help get off opioids but is temporary fix.
