"What should I do if my child is threatening to suicide if I make her go to rehab?"
Asked by HopetrackerA3 Seen by 176
I've begged and pleaded, and tried the "tough love" approach, but she still won't suck it up and get help. Every time I bring it up, she tells me she would rather die than go to rehab. She's attempted suicide before, and I've learned the hard way not to underestimate how serious she is. How do I get her to get help before it's too late? If she ever threatens suicide I would call 911 immediately - even if you don't believe her. Unfortunately, many times people will 'cry wolf' threatening suicide but it has to be taken as an emergency, and maybe she'll think twice about doing it in the future.

A threat of suicide for any reason should be handled as a crisis. Take her to the nearest emergency room or call 911. Look up the laws in your state so that you can find out what the protocol is for someone who is a current threat to themselves and how long they may be held for psychological evaluation.
