What is Heroin?

Heroin is classified as an opiate. It is a synthetically created mixture of natural opium found in the seed pod of the poppy plant and other additives. Depending on how the heroin is procesed, it will look like a fine white or brown powder. Occasionally it will be in rock form or will be created as a black sticky substance, which is known as black tar heroin. When heroin is in a powder form, it is generally sniffed, snorted, or smoked, but it can also be injected. Injecting heroin is dangerous and has the highest risk of overdose. Heroin is also called; down, smack, H or big H, dope, horse, china white, apple juice, junk, and hell dust.

Heroin usage is particularly dangerous because it is a street drug and has a high probability of being cut with other substances such as fentanyl. It also has high overdose rates because there is no specific regulation of dosage. When an overdose occurs, it is incredibly important to seek medical attention.

How Can You Tell if You Need Heroin Drug Rehab?

Heroin affects the opioid receptors of the brain, causing a euphoric rush that is also known as “nodding out.” These receptors affect the feelings of pain and pleasure, as well as controlling heart rate, sleeping, and breathing. Depending on whether the drug has been injected or sniffed it is incredibly fast-acting. When injected, the effects can be felt in as little as seven or eight seconds. When heroin is sniffed through the nose, the effect is noticeable within a few minutes. The drug’s effects last for about three to five hours.

It only takes a few weeks of regular usage of heroin to develop an addiction. The more a person uses heroin, the more their brain will crave the drug and the feeling the drug provides, and the larger the dosage required to achieve that feeling.

If you are concerned with whether you or a loved one could be struggling with an addiction to heroin, look for the following signs:

  • Using regularly instead of recreationally
  • Continually upping the amount being used to reach the same high
  • Unsuccessful attempts to cut down on usage or quitting altogether
  • Obsessive behavior regarding acquiring or using the drug
  • Avoiding friends or family members
  • Neglecting everyday responsibilities like work, school or home life
  • Loss of interest in hobbies, activities and pastimes
  • Taking the drug in increasingly dangerous ways
  • Feeling ill when kept from using

If you are dealing with any of the above situations because of heroin use, don’t hesitate to reach out to a reputable drug rehab center for help.

Treatment for Heroin Abuse

Dealing with Withdrawal Symptoms in Heroin Rehab

Heroin is an extremely potent drug that has a quick half-life (the time it takes for half of the drug to be out of the bloodstream). As such, the withdrawal symptoms are quite strong and come on quickly. Withdrawal symptoms can begin in as little as six to twelve hours and tend to be more severe than the withdrawal symptoms that accompany detoxing from prescription pills.

The most common symptoms that someone attempting to quit heroin will experience include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Severe dehydration
  • Insomnia
  • Agitation or heightened anxiety
  • Stomach Cramping or Diarrhea
  • Sweating
  • Muscle aches or spasms
  • Dilated pupils

These symptoms are generally at their peak around the third day of detox. If left unchecked, they can become so unbearable that it drives the person to keep using it. Because of this, it is best to seek professional help at a heroin addiction rehab when trying to get clean from heroin use.
